this week’s Thought (singular)
you don’t realise how good naps are until you have a bad one
a very warm welcome to all new readers. i love new readers so much that whenever i get an email about a new reader, i manifest that their mother has a manifestation for your newsletter readers when you ask her for a suggestion. thank you for joining us. may you be able to hear her from the other room. i couldn’t hear what my mother said. i think something to do with sunshine.
a very warm welcome to old readers as well. may good sense continue to prevail.
hi
this thodi, i come to you with miscellany. bits and bobs of what i’ve been reading, watching, listening to, doing, etcetera.
watching - i’m nearly done with a Parks & Recreation re-watch. still incredibly fun. it’s served to re-affirm my belief that no other genre can truly capture the magic of 20-minute sitcoms that run for years with 20 episodes per season. there’s something so lovely about this bite-sized, quick fix content that focuses on normal people doing normal things.
reading - the second book in the Locked Tomb series, Harrow the Ninth, by Tamsyn Muir. just as fun and convoluted as the first, but somehow more heartbreaking? beautifully written, and replete with lovely metaphors and imagery. so far, it’s made me laugh, cry, and be very very confused. if that’s not the mark of a good novel, i don’t know what is.
doing - i received a paint-by-numbers kit for my birthday in the beginning of february, and i’ve been having a great time painting by numbers. i’ve never been particularly good at painting (or, visual art in general) but i’m not going to be submitting this canvas for any awards, so that’s fine. leaning into the calmness and slow process of letting my brush glide (probably incorrectly) across where it’s supposed to at the end of a long day. and i know what you’re all thinking - when do we get to see this masterpiece? i have painted by one (1) number so far, and there are 20 in total. hope this helps.
going - i went for a brief visit back to mumbai near the end of last month, and saw how having close friends in a city makes the city that much more magical. i attended the mumbai art gallery festival, touring different galleries around south bombay through the day, met different friends from different parts of my life, and saw how my comfort level with the city itself had increased with every visit. it felt less like going, and more like going back.
listening - Let Love In by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. truly an album after my own heart. favourite tracks include Ain’t Gonna Rain Anymore and Loverman.
feeling - grateful for friends and family. tired and tired of uncertainty. working on being normal about all of it, and constantly moving.
